May Bumps Getting-On Races
4 June 1999

Women's Third VIII finished in the top 9 of the 27 competitors in the women's getting-on race, and qualified for May Bumps. They will start 16th in the women's 4th division.


Cambridge 99's Regatta
29 May 1999

This event was held on the Cam over the 970 metres sprint course, to a side-by-side knock-out format.

Women's VIIIs

Women's First VIII defeated Magdalene I comfortably in the opening round of the Mays First Division competition. Churchill then beat Darwin I by a canvas to win the final. Women's Second VIII lost out to Caius II in the final of the Mays Third Division competition.

Cambridge Sprint Regatta
16 May 1999

This event was held on a 400 metre course opposite Midsummer Common in Cambridge.

Men's VIIIs

Men's First VIII enjoyed three exciting contests against Emmanuel I in the final of the Mays First Division competition. The first race was declared a dead heat, and a re-row was called after a serious clash of blades second time around. Emmanuel managed to win narrowly at the third attempt. Men's Second VIII lost to Selwyn I in their first race in the Mays Second Division competition.

M2 Round 1: Selwyn I defeated Churchill II

Women's VIIIs

Women's First VIII were declared the winners of the Mays First Division competition after the only other entrant, Selwyn I, failed to turn up... Women's Second VIII, racing up a division, defeated Queens' II in the first round of the Mays Second Division category. The crew then defeated New Hall II in the second round, but lost to New Hall I in the semi-finals. Women's Third VIII defeated 1st & 3rd Trinity III in the opening round of the Mays Lower Boats category, but lost narrowly to Girton II in the semi-finals.

W1 Final: Churchill I defeated Selwyn I (scratched)

W2 Round 1: Churchill II defeated Queens' II
W2 Round 2: Churchill II defeated New Hall II
W2 Round 3: New Hall I defeated Churchill II

Cam Head to Head
16 May 1999

This event was held as an aggregate of two legs, each just under 3 km in length, between Chesterton Footbridge and the Motorway Bridge. Churchill Men's Second VIII completed the race in 19'11" to finish 9th overall and 4th among Second Division crews. Women's First VIII clocked 21'07" to finish 2nd to Emmanuel in the women's event. Women's Second VIII's time of 22'11" took 6th place overall and 2nd among Lower Division crews, while the Third VIII was 3rd Lower Division crew and 8th overall with 24'08".

Bedford Amateur Regatta
15 May 1999

Churchill Men's First VIII scored an excellent victory in S4 8+ at the Bedford Amateur Regatta. Churchill beat Caius II by 1.25 lengths in the opening round, and Jesus II by 1.5 lengths in round 2. The semi-final against University of East Anglia resulted in an easy Churchill victory, and the crew won an excellent final against Exeter College of Oxford by one length.

Nottingham City Regatta
8 May 1999

This event was conducted over 2000 metres at the National Watersports Complex in Nottingham. In very windy conditions, Churchill Men's First VIII finished third in their S4 8+ heat, and failed to advance to the final. Men's Second VIII were due to race in the semi-finals of the N 8+, but the weather closed in and racing was abandonned for the day at 4 PM.

Churchill Men's First VIII finished in a time of 9'10" to take 6th place overall and 2nd among Cambridge College crews. Men's Second VIII covered the distance in 9'56" to earn 17th place. Women's First VIII's time of 11'06" earned the crew 9th among Cambridge crews and 37th overall. Churchill's alumni and alumnae crews, competing as the Free Press Shovellers and Shovellettes respectively, completed the course in 10'15" and 11'23".
