CCBC May Bumps Dinner

Saturday 15th June 2002.

The sun is shining, the end of the exams is in sight, and May Week doesn't seem so far away any more...

Here are the details of this term's May Bumps Boat Club Dinner (when I use bigger font AND underlining, you know it'll be good...)

There will be a Pimms reception at 7.00pm, when formal crew photos will be taken by the Jet photographer.
The dinner will begin at 7.30pm.

Menu

Chunky Tomato Soup with Garlic Croutons
*****
Grilled Whole Rack of Lamb with Rosemary Sauce (V Spinach, Parmesan and Egg Lasagne)
Parisienne Potatoes Batons of Carrots
*****
Golden Apple Cheesecake with a Calvados Sauce
*****
Port
*****
Coffee & Churchill Mints

After the dinner, who knows??? Probably enough gossip creation to keep us talking all of May Week and most of next term... Traditionally May Term boat club dinner is a bigger event than the last two terms. Non-boaties and guests are welcome to attend (I seem to recall at least one 'phantom boat' last year, although memories are hazy...), and I will put some spare invitation slips on the boat club notice board.

The price is £26.00, and you can either pay by cheque or put this on your account card. Wine is not included in the price.

You can book your place, as usual, by returning a completed form to my pigeon hole, or emailing me with the following information: Name: Boat (if applicable): Account card number: Do you want a vegetarian meal?: I need your replies by Wednesday 12th June at the latest. Invitations will be in pigeon holes by the end of the day (if all goes to plan). I think that's about it.

Hope everything's going alright. Good luck to those with exams, Helen Russell (Junior Treasurer)

Michaelmas CCBC Cocktails

CCBC cocktails were held on Saturday the 27th October in Churchill College, Club Room. Tickets were £6 for as much as you could drink -and the drink kept flowing right until the last person dropped! The night started at 8pm and with a few Boat Races to get things moving the evening went brilliantly (if a bit blurrily!). I have no idea what time it finished - the drinks lasted longer than I did! Another cocktails night will be held next term so if you're interested in coming along - stay tuned as you'll hear it here first!

May Bumps & 40th Anniversary Dinner

This years May Bumps Dinner coincided with the 40th Anniversary of the Men's Boat Club so everyone wanted to make it a special and memorable occasion. Throughout the year David Sampson and Eddie Powell sent messages out through the Boat Club grape vine and managed to contact and invite a large number of past members to the dinner. The committee also worked hard to organise accomodation for the visitors and to make the meal a great occasion.

All the hard work and preparations were rewarded when over 140 past members and more than 60 current members of the Boat Club gathered at Churchill on Saturday 16th June for the Dinner. A photograph of all the members, past and present, taken before the meal, is sure to make a lovely souvenir of the evening.

The overall Captain of the Boat Club, Chris Saville, had the unenviable job of saying the pre-dinner prayer but, he coped admirably and recieved a well earned round of applause at the end! The dinner itself went down very well and Boat Races started in the middle of the main course and continued well into desserts ensuring everyone finished their wine and had a great time!

Speeches were a great source of entertainment as the president Jack Miller and past members recalled previous years Bumping triumphs and catastrophes. Sir John Boyd, the college's Master and the Boat Club's patron was warmly welcomed back to the High Table after being unable to attend this year's previous dinners due to ill health. Everyone was glad to see him back!

Post-Dinner drinks in the bar gave everyone the chance to catch up with old friends and to swap rowing tales.

Churchill College Boat Club would like to thank all those that attended and to all those that contributed to making the evening such a great success. We look forward to maintaing the contacts made during this year and hope to see more of those who attended at future Boat Club events.

Lent Bumps Dinner

This years Lent Bumps Dinner was an unusual occasion with few Bump stories to exchange due to the premature ending of the Bumps as a result of the devastating Foot and Mouth Crisis. However, this did not dampen spirits and everyone had a great time - the catering staff had once again excelled themselves and served a gorgeous meal that was much appreciated by all, and the traditional boat races meant that everyone was smiling throughout!

Lent CCBC Cocktails!

Hosted by the legendary & professional cocktail maker Tom Farley, the Lent Term Cocktails were another merry Boat Club occasion! Tom will still be here next year so you can expect more great cocktail nights in Michaelmas 2001(see above!)
