Fairbairns Cup

Due to very poor conditions on Friday 3rd December, the senior Fairbairns cup race has been postponed (for safety reasons) until next term.

On Thursday 2nd December, five Churchill novice crews sucessfully raced in the Fairbairns cup for novices. Report to follow!!

Racing Sucesses for Churchill Crews

Churchill crews have had a sucessfull few weeks in a variety of races.

All the novice crews rowed extremely well in the Claire Novice Sprint Regatta. The mens A boat rowed well, winning the first round against Christs, but were knocked out by LMBC B in the second round. Both the B and C boats were in excellent form, but unfortunately B boat did not progress as far as they should have, due to disqualification after a blade clash even though they won the race easily. The womens A boat were also knocked out in the third round by LMBC. The B boat stole the show however, by going through to eventually win the womens plate competion, seeing off Trinity Hall, St. Catherines', King's, Robinson and Pembroke.

Three of the senior fours (2 men's and 1 women's) raced in the Fours Head on the Thames. Although the results were slightly slower than last year the crews achieved good positions in the famous race.

Results are available on this website.

Colquhoun Sculls

Niko Loening raced in the Colquhoun Sculls on November the 8th. The Colquhoun Sculls advertises itself as "the most prestigious sculling competition in the Cambridge calendar" and is raced from the Little Bridge to just before the Railway Bridge. In the first round, not only did Niko beat his opponent (Harris of Caius BC) by 25 seconds, but he also managed to pass one of the competitors from the previous race. His second race went well until a steering error sent him into the bank coming out of Grassy Corner. Despite trying to make up for the lost time in the reach, Niko ended up losing by 7 seconds to Hopkirk (Emmanuel BC).

University Fours

A total of 4 CCBC boats took part in the university fours races between the 2nd and 5th November. This two-boat chasing event took place on the Cam, racing from just before the motorway bridge to just before the railway bridge, a distance of approximately 2.2km.

All Churchill races began on Tuesday 3rd, with the Mens crews racing St. Catharine's, Pembroke and Caius B and the Womens crew racing Newnham. Unfortunately, the first four lost to St Catharine's by 5.2s, despite remaining close up until Ditton corner. However, the second four scored an easy victory over Pembroke, as did the third four over Caius B. The Womens four lost to Newnham.

Wednesday saw a much awaited clash between the second and third mens fours. Despite good rowing from both crews, the second four scored a 8.1s victory taking them into the semi-final with the eventual tournament winners - St. Catharine's.

Results are now available.

Autumn Head and Training Weekend

The weekend of the 30-31st October has seen a lot of activity in the senior part of the boat club. On Saturday 20th, both the Womens crews competed in the Cam Autum Head race - 2600m from the Motorway bridge to the Green Dragon footbridge. The coxed four achieved a time of 13.09 for the coxed four and 13:04 for the coxed eight.

On both Saturday and Sunday, the first and second senior mens fours took part in a training weekend on the Thames. Rowing on the Tideway as guests of the Tideway Scullers School and coached by Martin Hoather (ex Churchill and CULRC), all those taking part felt they made significant improvements to their technique and had a great time.

In the meantime, our novice boats are all making good progress towards their first races in a few weeks time.

Senior Michealmas Crews Selected

Both the Churchill Mens and Womens senior crews have been selected. The mens boats consist of 3 fours, while the womens crews consist of 1 four and 1 eight.

Although a number of important rowers have moved on there are still plenty of people to provide a solid rowing base and we have high hopes for the forthcoming races.

See the crew lists for more information.

Novice Day

The boatclub held its annual novice day on Saturday 9th October. The day was a great sucess with many keen new boatclub members gaining their first experience in boats and on ergos.

Its still not too late to get involved with the boat club. Any prospective new oarsmen or women should contact either Adam Candy or Katy Yarwood as soon as possible!

Churchill Members Trialling for the University

Churchill rower Richard Gregory is trialling for the Cambridge University Boat Club this term. Richard enjoyed a number of successful races with the CUBC Summer Squad earlier in the year. Richard is the first Churchill rower to trial for CUBC since the 1995-96 season.

First VIII cox Oliver Martin is trialling for the CULRC this term. Unfortunately a persistent injury has forced Nick Guillard to abandon his plans to trial for CULRC.

Despite a productive stint with CUWBC's Development Squad last June, Madeleine Britton and Louise Jones will concentrate on rowing for Churchill this year, rather than trialling for the University crews.

Summer Rowing

Boston Marathon

CCBC men's captain Niko Loening rowed for the Free Press Boat Club in the Boston Marathon on September 19th along with Markus Steiner (captain of Robinson BC), Ben Hayek (captain of CCAT BC), and Tony Rutter (last year's captain of CCAT BC).

His novice coxless quad finished sixth overall (out of more than 150 boats) and second out of six in the men's S3 category. Due to a strong and steady headwind, times for all crews were much slower this year in comparison to previous years with some crews taking over six hours to complete the race. The Free Press crew finished the 31 mile race with an overall time of 4:18.

The crew would like to thank Chris Boswell for logistics support, Laurie Halifax for letting them use his quad, Bill Nolan for coaching, and Chris Lloyd for inspiration.

Peterborough Regatta

Niko Loening raced in a single scull on August 14 and 15 at the Peterborough Regatta. The August 14 races were 1000 meters, and Niko got to the final for novice sculls via a repechage, and to the semi-final for S3 sculls. After a hard night of partying, the 500 meter races the following day were thankfully short. Niko easily won his heat in novice sculls, but missed out of getting to the final after losing a very close semi-final that saw only 0.9 seconds difference between all the sculls. Niko would like to thank Jim Cameron and Chris Lloyd for their help sorting out a scull for the race, Rob Roy BC for trailer space, and Rob Oeffner for keeping his pants on at the notorious Saturday night party.
